During the summer vacations, the programs of the Budapest theaters move outdoors, in order to offer outstanding entertainment in an open air environment.

The Sziget Festival (pronounced ['sigɛt], similar to see'-get) is one of the largest music and cultural festivals in Europe. The festival is held annually in August in Budapest, Hungary and takes place on Óbudai-sziget ("Old-Buda Island"(also known as hajógyári/shipyard island), a leafy island of 108 hectares (266 acres) on the Danube, thus Sziget stands for Island. The traditional holiday of the end of the summer, which looks back to several hundred years (originally as the "feast of the new bread"). August 20th is Saint Stephen's Day, when the Basilica bearing the name of this the first Hungarian King pays homage to the patriarch. A water show, a water concert and other large-scale events can be seen in the city, and the highlight of this National Holiday is the Fireworks with countless rockets launched from various locations in the heart of the city.
